Spam; also known as blog spam, comment spam and social spam what-ever word used to describe it, which is a bad word in the blogging community.  Spam is used to increase the spammer’s website’s Google page ranking by piggybacking another website to mimic visibility and usage.

Blogs At Risk:

Bloggers must keep an eye out for potential spammers especially when they leave the ability for the public to comment on their blogs.  By putting in a few spam ware measures, bloggers can be at relative ease regarding spam.  However by using hyper linked text or link pages bloggers make themselves easy target for spam.

Bloggers also run the risk of Google’s page ranking removing their blog sites from their web crawler’s targets, as Google won’t rank a page that is infected by spam.

Origins Of  Spam:

Originally spam targeted email accounts by bulk sending unsolicited emails.  Now spammer’s target anywhere that is publicly accessible and more increasingly in blogs.  Accessibility is encouraged on such websites such as bulletin board services or open ended blogging services.  Regardless of what the content of the spam is, it is the delivery method that overwhelms websites and blogs, making them virtually unusable.

There are new legislations in place against the use of spam whether it is a person or a business which fall victim to spam.  While it is hard to peg down the spammers, bloggers leave themselves vulnerable unless they enforce security measures on their blogs.

How To Stop Spam From Corrupting Your Blog?

Identification Validation:

Bloggers can create a registration requirement that allows a follower access to the option of communication with the blogger through registration and validation.  Usually this is done by email verification after follower requests permission (registers.)

No follow:

No follows are (rel=”nofollow”) attached to hyperlinks so that search engines don’t follow the links and misinterpret the links page ranking. This was addressed by Google in 2005 (Yahoo and Bing also follow this rule.)

Reverse Turing Test:

These tests (tests of humanity) are used to validate the register or user as human, not a robot program.  CAPTCHA is a type of Turing test that by having to use different caps in the reverses Turing test, the web masters can be certain that they haven’t been targeted by robot spam-ware.

Anti-Spam Programs:

There are a multitude of programs of anti-spam and spam filters available to bloggers to prevent spam. Most of this software has a built in learning process; the more times spam is identified and marked, the better these programs operate.  Bloggers must take care not to answer spam, and therefore must be able to recognize spam even if it appears to be an innocuous comment.

Blogging is a fantastic tool to get information out to the masses, whether it is for education, entertainment or product information.  Unfortunately bloggers get targeted by spammers because of open ended web sites, guest books and hyperlinks. By taking security measures, bloggers can maintain the integrity of their blogs.
